How Does Web Offset Printing Work?

Instead of feeding individual sheets into the press, this method uses large rolls of paper called “webs” that run continuously through the press. As the paper moves, it passes through a series of printing units where ink is applied using metal plates and rubber blankets, much like in sheet fed offset printing.
The key difference is in the delivery and drying. After printing, the paper is rapidly dried using UV/LED or an oven, then cut, folded, and stacked all in one continuous process. Once it’s up and running, it can produce thousands of pages per minute with sharp, repeatable quality.

What Type of Ink Does Web Offset Printing Use?

Friesens has three Web Offset presses. Our newest, installed late 2024, uses ink specially formulated to dry instantly under LED lights. They require less energy to cure and offer more control over ink density.
Our older Web Offset Presses uses heat set inks, which require a drying oven and UV inks which uses a Mercury lamp to dry the ink.
