Flexible Paper and Finishing Options

You’ve got options…and lots of them.  Whether you’re going for a sleek, matte finish, a bold glossy look, or something with texture and character, our sheet fed presses are built to deliver your vision.  Your sales representative can help you find the right paper and finish to bring your project to life exactly the way you imagined it.

Built for Longevity

Books printed with sheet fed offset technology are built to go the distance.  The process locks in ink and strengthens the structure of each page, so your books hold up beautifully, even after years of reading, flipping, and sharing.

How Does Offset Printing Work?

Offset printing starts with your digital files, which are separated into the four standard printing colours…cyan, magenta, yellow, and black (CMYK).  Each colour is transferred onto its own aluminum plate.

Once the plates are ready, they’re mounted onto the press.  Ink is applied to the image areas of each plate, while water keeps the non-image areas clean.  The image is then transferred…or offset…from the plate to a rubber blanket and finally onto the paper.  This indirect transfer helps maintain sharpness and detail, even on textured papers.

Each sheet of paper passes through multiple printing units…one for each colour…building the final image layer by layer.  A fine powder is applied between sheets to prevent smudging while the ink dries.

Because the setup is so precise, once everything is in place, the press runs quickly and efficiently.  That’s what makes offset printing such a cost-effective choice for high volume jobs, especially when quality can’t be compromised.

What Type of Ink Does Sheet Fed Offset Printing Use?

At Friesens, we use a lot of ink, and we’re intentional about how we use it.  Our presses, including our sheet fed offset presses, run on vegetable-based inks made from flax, soy, and canola.  These inks aren’t just vibrant on the page, they’re also easier to de-ink and recycle, making them a smarter environmental choice.

We also receive our ink in reusable barrels, helping cut down on unnecessary plastic and metal waste.
