WHAT “RECYCLED PAPER” REALLY MEANS
When paper is described as containing recycled material, it means some of the fibre used to make it has already had a previous life. That fibre is recovered and processed into new paper instead of being sent to the landfill. Recycled paper can include material collected after use, as well as clean scraps left over from manufacturing processes. Both reduce the need for brand new wood fibre, but they’re not quite the same thing.

The certification system focuses on protecting forests, respecting Indigenous rights, supporting workers, and safeguarding wildlife.
FSC certification provides confidence that the virgin fibre used in paper comes from forests managed with long-term sustainability in mind. FSC certification also includes a chain-of-custody system, which tracks fibre from forest to finished product.

HOW RECYCLED CONTENT AND FSC WORK TOGETHER
Recycled content and FSC certification are not opposites. In fact, many papers combine both. A sheet can include PCW fibre and be FSC-certified, covering both responsible sourcing and material reuse. FSC even allows for certified recycled labels when recycled fibre meets its standards.
In practical terms, this means book paper can support sustainable forestry while also making use of recycled material. The result is a balanced approach that considerers forests, waste reduction, and production needs.
