Raw Board Edges

Edge With Intention

Raw board edges offer a bold, natural finish that highlights the craftsmanship of your book. This exposed-edge style adds texture and authenticity, giving your cover a rustic, organic look that stands out on the shelf.

How Are They Created?

Raw board edges are a technique where the edges of the cover board are intentionally left exposed to showcase the natural texture and colour of the board itself. It starts with a high-quality, dense board, usually 100pt or 150pt, for the cover. The cover board is cut precisely to size with sharp, clean edges. The outer cover material is then applied only to the front and back surfaces of the board, not around the edges. The edges can be left completely natural or lightly sanded for a smoother finish, then the book block is cased into the raw edge cover using standard encasing techniques. Extra care is taken to avoid damaging the exposed edges.

Why Add Raw Board Edges?

Choosing raw board edges is a bold design decision that highlights the natural beauty and craftsmanship of your book. By leaving the edges of the cover board exposed you create a rustic, organic aesthetic that feels both intentional and authentic. This finish pairs beautifully with recycled or textured materials, reinforces eco-conscious branding, and adds tactile contrast when combined with foil stamping or minimalist design.
