Inlays
Depth Meets Detail
Transform your book cover into a work of art with inlays. This premium technique adds texture, depth, and a touch of luxury that invites readers to reach out and feel the story before they even open the book.

How Are They Applied?
An inlay is a technique similar to woodworking where an image or other cover element matching the shape, size, and thickness of the inlay is removed from the cover of the book. The inlay is placed in the resulting space. The inlay is made from a different material or finish than the main cover, such as a textured paper, metal, or specialty laminate. Using diecutting or laser-cutting technology, a shape matching the inlay is carefully removed from the book cover material. This cut must match the inlay’s dimensions exactly in shape, size, and thickness. The inlay piece is then inserted into the cutout space, sitting flush with the surface of the cover.
Why Add Inlays?
Inlays are a powerful way to elevate your book cover with a premium, custom-crafted look. They add depth, texture, and visual contrast, perfect for highlighting titles, logos, or design elements in a way that feels both refined and memorable. Whether you’re creating a special edition or simply want your book to stand out, inlays offer a distinctive finish that signals quality and creativity.

Inlays + Embossing/Debossing
Combining inlays with embossing or debossing creates a multi-dimensional effect that enhances the look and feel of a book cover. Once the inlay is secured in the book cover, the same area is embossed or debossed, adding tactile depth and shadow.
Inlays + Spot Gloss UV
The combination of the recessed inlay and raised spot UV created a layered effect that plays with light and texture, adding shine and contrast, especially when paired with matte finishes.
Inlays + Foil Stamping
For a luxurious effect, inlays and foil stamping can’t be beat. This combination adds a reflective, eye-catching finish that highlights key design elements like titles or patterns.
Helpful Hints
- We recommend the debossed area for inlays be about 1/16″ larger on all sides than the finished trim size of the inlay to allow for proper placement.
- Metal inlays don’t work well with certain materials. We can help you choose the right material for your book cover to avoid the metal flaking.
- Friesens provides InDesign and Photoshop templates tailored to different board thicknesses and cover sizes to help ensure the artwork aligns correctly with the inlay area and spine.
