A Legacy of Sustainability

| Books

~ by Andrew Fennell, Vice-President of Finance

Making a positive impact on the environment and supporting sustainable practices is now more important than ever. Even before it became a subject of scrutiny, Friesens committed to contributing to a greener environment, and looking for ways to minimize our ecological footprint by making the best use of all our resources. We have continued to use our resources as carefully as possible – reusing and recycling whatever we can. In particular, any paper waste that leaves our plant is recycled in such a manner that it can be used again.

Friesens Environmental Vision and Goals

Friesens vision is clear: to be an earth-friendly business through sustainable practices and eco-education. Our goal to this end is centred around continuous improvement:

  • focusing on helping customers source and incorporate environmentally friendly solutions,
  • increasing the use of eco-friendly products,
  • embracing the principles of reduce, recycle, and reuse within our workplace.

Energy Efficiency and Low Carbon Footprint

Friesens is committed to energy efficiency, exclusively using hydro-electric and wind power to fuel our production facilities. This dedication to renewable energy sources significantly reduces our carbon footprint, which means we are among the leaders in sustainable energy use within the printing industry.

FSC Certification and Sustainable Paper Use

Friesens is FSC-certified, ensuring that the paper we use is sourced from sustainably managed forests and certified sources. This certification means that our operations do not contribute to deforestation or habitat destruction. Additionally, we prioritize the use of paper with post-consumer waste (PCW) content, with much of it being 100% PCW, further emphasizing a commitment to sustainability.

Comprehensive Recycling Programs

Recycling is at the heart of Friesens waste management strategy. We recycle 98% of our paper waste and all of our printing plates, significantly diverting waste from landfills. Our use of low-VOC and vegetable-based inks, supplied in reusable drums, also minimizes waste and reduces the environmental impact of our printing processes.

Sustainability is monitored in direct and indirect ways such as:

  • Waste Reduction and Employee Education

Friesens implements comprehensive recycling and waste reduction programs, optimizing print layouts to reduce material usage and implementing stringent quality control measures to decrease misprints. Employee-owners are educated about the importance of waste reduction and recycling, helping them to contribute to the company’s sustainability goals.

  • Optimizing Printing Processes for Energy Efficiency

Energy consumption is a significant factor in the sustainability of printing operations. Friesens invests in modern, energy-efficient printing presses that consume less electricity. Regular maintenance and calibration of equipment ensure peak efficiency, preventing energy wastage. Additionally, the use of imposition software helps reduce wastage by maximizing the use of printing stock and runs.

Friesens commitment to sustainability is evident in every aspect of our operations. By prioritizing eco-friendly practices, we not only reduce our environmental impact but seek to achieve high standards in the printing industry. For customers seeking a company that genuinely cares about the environment, Friesens offers a compelling choice.
