Tips for Strong Yearbook Photography
- PLAN AHEAD: Great photography starts with being prepared. Create a calendar of events and everyday moments (think club meetings or students helping each other in the hallways). Think beyond the big milestones. Putting together a shot list can help photographers stay on track and get all the shots they need.
- USE NATURAL LIGHT: Whenever possible, shoot in natural light as it adds warmth and authenticity to your photos.
- GET CANDID: Candid shots often tell the most compelling stories. Observe and capture students in action…laughing with their friends or concentrating in class. These are the real moments that make the yearbook feel alive.
- TELL A STORY: Every photo you put in your school yearbook should tell a story. Is it a story of teamwork? Achievement? Friendship? A single image can speak volumes when framed with intention.
- VARY YOUR ANGLES: Try many different perspectives…shooting low to the ground for a dramatic sports shot, or above to capture the energy of a packed hallway. Changing your angle adds visual interest and helps your photos stand out. Moving around is also so important! Move around the room or field to create a well-rounded picture.
- FOCUS ON FACES: Expressions are powerful. A smile, a look of determination or a moment of surprise can instantly connect the viewer to the subject. Make sure faces are in focus and well-lit!
- EDIT THOUGHTFULLY: Post-processing of photos should enhance, not overpower. Keep edits consistent across the yearbook to maintain a cohesive visual style.
- PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE: Whether it’s practicing going up and approaching people or practicing shooting in different lighting conditions, the more you practice the more confident you will be.
