Meet Your Cover Contest Judges
As the old saying goes, you can’t judge a book by its cover…but you CAN judge THE cover! The 2023-24 Friesens Cover Contest is back for another year, and we’re excited to introduce you to this year’s judges!
First up, a woman who we’re sure needs no introduction but we’ll do it anyway…Katie Moreno! Katie is an education consultant and the founder of Organized Adviser. She absolutely immerses herself in yearbooks; when she needs some down-time, she enjoys scuba diving, collecting pins from the cities she visits, and iced coffee.
Next we have David Burney, a seasoned graphic designer with over 20 years of industry experience. For more than 10 years he has helped yearbook students convey their grandest ideas through cover designs he has developed along side the students themselves. He has more fonts than he can use, an unhealthy paper obsession and occasionally mixes his CMYK with RGB. The ampersand enthusiast can often be found designing tee shirts for his Cotton Bureau store or debating whether it’s time to finally change those guitar strings.
Peter Wiebe is a retired high school art and science teacher, as well as a yearbook advisor from the days of heavy contact cement fumes and a steady hand to trim pictures with an exacto knife. He still has a strong appreciation for art, specifically landscape sketching and watercolours. When he’s not indulging in creativity you can find him helping those in his community with odd jobs, looking after his six grandsons (between the ages of five and seventeen), or travelling with his wife.
Finally, Sandi Enns has been a Friesens employee-owner (and resident “cover girl”) since 1990, after graduating from the Advertising Art Program at Red River College. Since joining us, she’s worked her way from hand-drawing artwork and cutting overlays for different colours to the full colour digital masterpieces we see today. She loves to see the skill and creativity of students all over North America!
Our judges are excited to see your work through the lenses of creativity, theme representation, visual appeal, typography, composition, and level of difficulty. We’ll share more details on the judging rubric shortly…good luck!
