Pantone Colour of the Year: Viva Magenta

“WELCOME TO THE MAGENTAVERSE” Pantone announces in crisp, white text, overlaying an incredible image of what looks to be bark swirled into a shape that resembles a face. It’s that time, wherein the work of multiple secret meetings across Europe, involving some of the greatest colour experts the world has to offer. Since the year 2000 Pantone, arguably the creators of the most well-known colour spaces in the world, has brought forth a colour for the upcoming year that is meant to encapsulate the zeitgeist. Often vibrant, and always beautiful, the colours are given the red-carpet treatment, with a descriptor of why that particular shade was chosen, as well as a collection of complementary hues to round out the palette.

I’ve always looked forward to the early-December announcement. In the rush of Holiday events and never-ending to-do list that accompanies the last months of the calendar, it’s often the reminder I need to look forward to all the possibilities of the new year. What adventures there are to be had! Interesting people to meet, new food to try, and new experiences to chase down, even as the wheel spins on into the future.

It’s been nearly three years since the world came to a standstill. Loved ones, careers, plans, and educations have been lost or temporarily misplaced. And it’s clear that Pantone hasn’t been unaffected, both 2021 and 2022’s colours (Ultimate Gray, and Very Peri respectively) were muted, and soft, allowing for a gentleness I, for one, have felt the need for.

In contrast, Viva Magenta is powerful, a blast of intensity that reminds us that we’re still here, and it’s time to pick back up as best we can. Pantone describes the colour as “brave and fearless…a joyous and optimistic celebration, writing a new narrative”, and it’s important to remember that this colour won’t exist in a vacuum. Creators and designers from all realms of innovation will bring it into their work, allowing it to become an indelible piece of the fabric of the year.

So, as you navigate 2023, with whatever it may bring you, keep an eye out for samples of Viva Magenta being used in advertising campaigns, in fashion and architecture, in both print and digital design. You may be surprised to see where it pops out, proving its versatility to the world at large.
