Friesens Wraps Up ‘I Love To Read Month’

February is always a special month in the world of books as “I Love to Read” month is celebrated on a local and national level to encourage reading, writing and literacy awareness.

At Friesens in Altona, this means February has special meaning since the community’s largest employer is in the business of books, and proud to take part in this promotional campaign every year along with Golden West.

In previous years the campaign saw Golden West and Friesens read to hundreds of Grade 2 students, in classroom, throughout the Pembina Valley. Friesens ensured all Grade 2 students read to were provided with a book at the 16 schools across 6 school divisions.

“There were always a variety of employee-owners volunteering their time and reading expertise to attend one of the participating schools and read to the students in their classroom setting,” said a news release.

This year, as well as last year, a few adjustments had to be made in a slightly different and memorable way.

“Since we were unable to meet in the classrooms and read to the children personally, the reading sessions had to be done virtually. The book we chose for 2022 was entitled The Smile That Went Around the World written by Patrice Karst and illustrated by Jana Christy. We had six volunteers read The Smile That Went Around the World in the comfort of our library at Printers Way where each reading was recorded on video. Always a fun and unique experience.”

Radio announcers from CFAM Radio 950/Country88/Eagle 93.5 hosted the virtual readings this year.
