Three Piece Case

Style de couverture classique

A three piece case is a timeless bookbinding method that combines two complementary materials or colours to create a refined, traditional look. This style features a distinct spine treatment that contrasts with the rest of the cover, offering both durability and visual appeal. It’s ideal for projects that call for a touch of elegance while maintaining structural integrity.

What is a Three Piece Case?

A three piece case is a classic look that brings the cover together with two colours of material…either two different types of material or a single material printed in two different colours to simulate the effect. This involves first sewing or perfect binding the book block. The spine of the book is not glued directly to the spine of the case but rather adhered by the end sheets and reinforced with materials like mull cloth. Cloth or material is then applied to the front and back coverboard. The book block is then glued into the case using the end sheets, which are pasted to the inside of the front and back cover.

Because three piece cases use two distinct materials, or a single material printed in two colours, it enables the creation of bold contrasts or subtle harmonies depending on the tone of the book.

Durabilité améliorée

By reinforcing the spine with a stronger material, a three piece case protects the most vulnerable part of the book. This makes it ideal for books that will be handled frequently or need to last over time.
