A round back case is a traditional hardcover binding style known for its gently curved spine. This classic shape not only adds visual elegance but also improves how the book opens and handles, especially for thicker volumes. The spine is rounded during production to create a smooth arc, giving the book a timeless, refined appearance.
How Is It Made?
The process begins with gathering and sewing the book block, which is then shaped using a rounding and backing technique to create the curved spine. A one-piece board is used for the cover, with a spine strip that’s slightly narrower than the actual spine width to allow for proper curvature during casemaking. Once the spine is formed, the cover boards are glued and aligned to the book block in a process called casing-in, ensuring a secure and professional finish.
