Layflat Sewn Binding
Luxury That Lasts
Layflat Sewn Binding features thread-sewn pages that are specially bound to allow the book to open completely flat, enhancing both usability and visual presentation. It’s ideal for publications that demand interrupted spreads and a premium, durable finish.

What is Layflat Sewn Binding?
The process for creating a layflat sewn binding is similar to the classic sewn binding, with one major difference. Unlike a standard sewn binding, the sewn book block is bound using a layflat adhesive technique. This involves attaching the book block to the cover in a way that allows the spine to “float” slightly, enabling the pages to open completely flat without cracking or stressing the spine.
Seamless Visual Experience
Because the book opens flat, images and text can flow uninterrupted across the spread, making it perfect for design-heavy book layouts.
Enhanced Useability
With a Layflat Sewn Binding, readers don’t have to hold the book open or fight against the spine, making it ideal for publications where hands-free viewing is helpful.
Long-Lasting Construction
The sewn signatures provide superior strength compared to perfect bound methods, ensuring the book holds up with time, even with frequent use.
Helpful Hints
- Books with a spine width less than 0.75″ will not lay flatter with a lay flat binding. A regular sewn binding will help the book lay as flat as possible.
- The approximate maximum spine width is 3.125″ for a hardcover (depending on book width) and 2.75″ for a softcover.
- All hardcover sewn books with a spine width of 0.375″ or less must have board in spine, and no headbands.
- The minimum width for the addition of headbands to a sewn hardcover book is 0.25″.
- Sewn binding books can be printed on any of our presses.
