The Art of Paper Selection

| Books

~ by Rob Tucci, Ontario Sales Representative

When it comes to book printing, the paper you choose is more than just a surface for ink…it’s a key part of the reader’s experience.  But with so many stocks to choose from, it’s hard not to get overwhelmed!  Friesens is here to guide you through the process with our decades of experience in book manufacturing.

Paper affects everything from how your book looks and feels to how it holds up over time.  It influences the weight, thickness, and even the perceived quality.  Whether it’s a novel, a coffee table book, or a textbook, the right paper choice can elevate your project from good to exceptional!

COATED VS. UNCOATED

One of the first decisions you’ll make is whether to use coated or uncoated stock. Coated paper has a smooth finish that enhances image sharpness and colour vibrancy, perfect for photo-heavy books or high-end publications. Uncoated paper, on the other hand, offers a more natural texture and is ideal for text heavy books, giving a warm, tactile reading experience.  Our blog breaks down the differences between the two in more detail, helping you match your book’s purpose and audience.

KEY CHARACTERISTICS TO CONSIDER

Beyond coated or uncoated, here are some other factors to keep in mind:

  • Opacity: Prevents text from showing through the page.
  • Weight & Thickness: Affects the book’s bulk and shipping costs.
  • Finish: Ranges from matte to glossy, influencing both aesthetics and readability.
  • Colour: White, cream, or natural tones can set the mood of your book.
  • Environmental Impact: Friesens offers eco-friendly options for publishers who value sustainability.

We stock approximately 2 million pounds of “house” paper in our warehouse and have access to most papers produced in North American and many overseas.  That means we can help you find the perfect match for your project, no matter how unique.

What’s great is choosing paper isn’t something you have to do alone.  Our Sales Representatives can walk you through the options, ask the right questions, and recommend the best fit for your goals.  We know that paper selection is both an art and a science, balancing aesthetics, functionality, and budget.  Every book deserves the right foundation, and that starts with the paper.
