Perfecting Photo Layouts

| Yearbooks

Photos are the heart of your yearbook, but even the best photos can fall flat if the layout doesn’t do them justice.  Here are seven things to watch out for when placing photos on your yearbook pages:

SKIPPING THE DOMINANT PHOTO

Every spread needs a star. Your dominant photo should be the best image on the page…visually striking, emotionally engaging, and at least 2.5 times larger than the others. It draws the reader in and sets the tone for the story you’re telling.

BLEED PHOTOS THAT DON’T BLEED PROPERLY

Want your photo to run off the edge of the page? Make sure it extends at least 1 pica past the trim line. And don’t forget to keep important content (like faces or text) at least 2 picas inside the edge…otherwise, it might get chopped off during printing.

PHOTOS FACING THE WRONG WAY

Here’s a simple trick: make sure your subjects are looking across the gutter or toward the reader. It creates a sense of connection and flow. If you need to flip an image, go for it, but double-check that any text or logos aren’t reversed!

STRETCHING PHOTOS TO FIT BOXES

Sometimes you just want THAT photo to fill THAT space. But stretching it out of proportion can make it look awkward or pixelated. Instead, resize while keeping the original aspect ratio, or adjust your layout to suit the photo.

USING ALL THE SAME SHAPES AND SIZES

Variety is the spice of layout life. Repeat the shape of your dominant photo for consistency, then mix it up with smaller images in different sizes. This adds visual interest and helps guide the reader’s eye across the page.

OVERSIZING PHOTOS TOO MUCH

Need to enlarge a photo? No problem!  Just keep it within 125% of its original size. Any bigger, and you risk losing image quality. If it doesn’t fit, swap it out or tweak the layout.

INCONSISTENT SPACING

Margins matter! Keep internal spacing consistent across your spread (and ideally, throughout the whole book). If you’re overlapping photos, use the same style on every page to keep things cohesive.
