How Inkjet Supports Sustainable Printing

| Books

Sustainability matters more than ever in publishing. From the paper you choose to how many books you print, every decision has an environmental impact. That’s where inkjet printing really shines! It’s not just a smart production option; it’s a more sustainable way to bring books into the world.

PRINTING ONLY WHAT YOU NEED (AND NOTHING MORE)

One of the biggest environmental advantages of inkjet printing is its ability to support shorter, “right-sized” print runs. Inkjet makes it practical to print smaller batches as needed. With this technology it allows us to produce hundreds, or even thousands, of copies at an economical price. That also means fewer books sitting in storage, fewer unsold copies heading for recycling or the landfill, and far less overproduction overall.

LESS PAPER WASTE FROM START TO FINISH

Inkjet printing is designed with efficiency in mind. The digital setup process is streamlined, which means less paper used during make-ready. Fewer test sheets, fewer adjustments, and less discarded paper before the final book even starts rolling off the press. Over the course of a print run, that reduction adds up…saving resources and lowering the overall environmental footprint of the project.

SMARTER USE OF COLOUR AND INK

Inkjet shines for black and white projects that include just a few colour pages. Instead of running an entire book on a colour press, inkjet allows colour to be used only where it’s needed, reducing overall ink usage while still delivering strong visual impact.

At the same time, it’s worth noting that inkjet isn’t limited to light colour work. When the project is a good fit, inkjet can produce impressive full-colour results, expecially for books that don’t require ultra-high-fidelity requirements. This flexibility makes inkjet a smart, resource-efficient choice for a wide range of projects.

SUPPORTING LEANER INVENTORY AND REDUCED SHIPPING

When you can print books in smaller quantities, you don’t need to store or ship large volumes all at once. Inkjet supports a more “as needed” mindset, helping publishers keep inventory lean and responsive. Fewer shipments, less warehousing, and more efficient logistics all contribute to lower emissions across the supply chain. Sustainability isn’t just about how a book is printed, it’s about everything that happens after, too.

A PRACTICAL STEP TOWARD GREENER PUBLISHING

Sustainable printing doesn’t have to mean compromise. Inkjet presses deliver speed, quality, and flexibility while also supporting environmentally responsible choices. By reducing waste, optimizing resources, and aligning product with real demand, inkjet printing helps publishers create books they can feel good about.
