Every year, National Recycling Day reminds us of the importance of recycling and its impact on our environment. At Friesens, sustainability isn’t just a buzzword or something we do to make us look good…it’s a core value that drives our operations and innovations. As we celebrate National Recycling Day, let’s take a closer look at how Friesens is making a difference.
Friesens has a long-standing commitment to environmental stewardship. We believe that sustainable practices are essential for the well-being of our planet and future generations. This commitment is reflected in every aspect of our business, from the materials we use to the processes we implement.
As a book manufacturer, we obviously use a lot of paper, so recycling is at the heart of our sustainability efforts. Not only do we bale and recycle 100% of paper waste from the pressroom, but also from bindery, prepress, and our offices. Our paper recycling program significantly reduces the amount of waste sent to landfills and contributes to a circular economy.
One of the ways we promote sustainability is by prioritizing the sourcing of paper through responsibly managed forests and ensuring that the paper products are certified by recognized environmental organizations. Roughly 90% of the paper we use each year is FSC certified, meaning that the paper came from responsibly manage forests and other responsible sources. We strive to increase the percentage of post-consumer waste (PCW) paper tonnage we use annually, and ensure all marketing and sales materials are produced on recycled or FSC paper.
It’s important to note that we’re not just recycling the paper we use at Friesens! We’re also recycling the aluminum plates used in our offset presses (about 267,000 pounds per year), the plastic waste from our packaging division…basically everything that we can to ensure that we’re reducing out ecological footprint. Around 156 truckloads of recyclable materials leave our facilities every year.
As we celebrate National Recycling Day, we reaffirm our commitment to sustainability. Friesens will continue to innovate and implement practices that protect our environment and promote a sustainable future. We invite you to join us in our efforts to make a positive impact on the planet…together we can make a difference.
