The Business of Books Training Course
Introduction
Friesens has a strong reputation for training and preparing staff for careers in book manufacturing. As a major employer in a mostly rural area, Friesens relies heavily on the surrounding region for staff. Such a hiring philosophy requires a strong commitment to staff to help them understand the complexities of book manufacturing.
Over the past 15 years the Graphic Arts course, run jointly by Friesens and Red River College, offered students hundreds of hours of in-depth exposure to the book manufacturing industry.
Recently this program was revised and replaced by the Business of Books course. Annually this series of internal training sessions gives selected staff an inside look at management, sales, supplier relations, production processes, and the communication skills needed to be successful in a career of book manufacturing.
Today's Course
The Business of Books course takes students well beyond the textbook preparing them to be future leaders in our company and in our industry. Modules and units of study expose students to theory and practice as senior managers and veteran operators share their knowledge and expertise. Time is spent in the classroom and on the production floor of one of North America’s most modern book manufacturing plants.
Originally, students were recruited from regional High Schools. More recently, management has made this course available exclusively to full time staff members. Selected by their Managers on the basis of demonstrated strengths and ambition, potential students are given the opportunity to apply for this training experience.
The class size is restricted to no more than 6 students to allow for maximum exposure and experience to the learning resources, the production departments, and the equipment.
Over a period of several months students experience the workflow of jobs making their way through the plant. An opportunity is given to specialize in a particular area of interest.
Future success is not a given – the Business of Books training course is a way of preparing today’s staff to lead Friesens into the future.
