5-Colour Press Operator

The 5-C Press Operator is responsible to ensure the safe, efficient operation, cleaning of and running adjustments of the press, producing printed product according to docket and proof instructions. He/she is also responsible for the prescribed quantity and quality of product produced. Other responsibilities include troubleshooting machine basic performance, making adjustments and calling for additional resources as required.

Qualifications:
• High School diploma, GED or equivalent;
• Training and experience on other press equipment;
• Has passed Friesens internal colour test;
• Ability to work independently and in a team setting;
• Strong work ethic;
• Experience with routine maintenance operations;
• Continuous improvement mindset;
• Able to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing in the English language;
• Able to work well under pressure;
• Strong attention to detail;
• Able to deal with people diplomatically and professionally at all times;
• Proven organization and problem solving skills;
• Basic computer skills.

Responsibilities:
• Work and communicate effectively with the Shift Managers, Department Manager, and staff;
• Work and communicate effectively with customers during press checks;
• Manage press run and feeder for quality, efficiency, and productivity:
o Understand the job requirements from information on the docket, on the proofs, and in the job bag, and locate all the components of the job;
o Efficiently set up the press as required and run make-ready sheets making necessary adjustments:
– Check plates for imperfections;
– Set-up consul and delivery;
– Adjust blanket pressure;
– Adjust powder to prevent offset;
– Ensure ink densities, fit, and colour:
– Ink/H2O Balance;
– Dot gain, density, trapping theory;
– Printing pressure settings;
– Square and center image;
– Ensure lineup on second side;
– Ensure page sequence and corrections;
– Visual check of press sheets and signed approval;
– Clean blanket;
– Verify/prepare and maintain ink supply;
– Mount plates and set up feeder;
– Set up perfecting drum as required;
– Check for square and centre image on sheet;
– Maintain sheet-to-sheet fit, and lineup front to back on second side;
– Set guides and clean blankets;
– Return unused paper and store press sheets;
– Maintain Press chemicals;
o Run job to quantity with overs as required:
– Periodic pulls for visual checks;
– Check for offset;
– Identify finished lifts with accurate counts;
o Return docket and job bag;
o File OK Sheets;
• Manage and perform press maintenance as described in the Press Maintenance Binder and the Operator’s Manual;
• Practice Friesens safety procedures for equipment and plant situations.

Qualifications:
• A Mechanical Engineering Technology Diploma
• Bachelor’s Degree in Packaging Engineering or Mechanical Engineering;
• Licensing by a provincial or Canadian association of professional engineers is not required;
• Minimum of 5 years of engineering experience. Parts design is an asset;
• Proficiency in Solid Works or other CADD software;
• Able to prioritize work and make good judgment calls based on business needs;
• Strong computer skills;
• Proven written and verbal communication skills (English);
• Superior creative abilities for premium packaging design and business solutions, workflows and systems;
• Interpersonal skills, with a high degree of tact and diplomacy;
• Able to build and maintain lasting relationships with customers, corporate departments and key business partners;
• Strong problem identification and problem resolution skills;
• Project Management training/experience an asset;
• Continuous Improvement mindset; proactive for change and improvement;
• Highly analytical with the ability to view projects with an “out-of-the-box” mindset.
