At Friesens we currently make our case for the Encaser on two Kolbus and
one Horauf case maker. Our newest machine is the Kolbus Strato DA 232 case maker,
which was installed in March of 2000. The Strato and Horauf are similar in that
the maximum and minimum sizes are almost identical, as are the running speeds.
The Kolbus DA 36 case maker is an older machine, which we use, for specialty
covers like “Round Corners” or “Three Piece Cases”. We make two main types of
covers, “Board in Spine” and “Regular or Soft Spine” covers.
The cover consists of a cover wrap, the spine strip, and the board for the front and back panel. The board can be several different thicknesses that includes .044 up to 150 point. The cover wrap can be almost any soft or flexible material that has the consistency of paper or cloth. The wrap is most often paper, a paper product, or cloth and can be printed, laminated or foil stamped prior to being applied to the board.
The second element is the cover board. The cover material is coated in glue and wrapped around the board. On a regular spine cover the spine is a strip of paper that is fed into the center of the cover and is glued to the cover wrap between the front and back cover panels. There is a space on each side of the spine strip that we call the "gutter". The gutter is placed there to allow the cover to hinge at the spine after it is applied to the book.
Board in Spine covers are similar in that the cover looks the same but has a spine strip the same thickness as the front and back panel. So if the board for the panels are 100 point then the spine strip will also be 100 point. If needed, the completed covers are foil stamped or embossed as per customer specifications. We also have the capacity to make padded covers, round cornered covers, and three-piece or quarter bound cases.
